A Post inspired by a Post....Milk Glass

I had in mind to do another post tied in to home-making.  The beginnings of it were skipping around in my mind - not quite put together yet, just something I wanted to talk about.

BUT...

This morning, I visited another blog sister's post. Laura's,  over at  http://www.whitespraypaintblog.com/ . She had posted about White Milk Glass, and some vintage Milk Glass Party Sets she has. And she USES them.  How cool is that?

**Milk glass is an opaque or translucent, milky white or colored glass, blown or pressed into a wide variety of shapes. First made in Venice in the 16th century, colors include blue, pink, yellow, brown, black, and the white that led to its popular name.**

Laura's post reminded me of my mama and her glass party/hostess sets. They were stored in boxes that were blue and white. I can remember those so well...like yesterday. She put hers to use QUITE a bit.  My mom was the hostess with the mostest.  Being a minister's wife, she did her share of get-togethers and parties for women...especially those in the church groups, and circles. Of course my sister and I always were forced  (just kidding, sort of)  called upon to help!  lol...

I do love milk glass. It just has a way of making you think of the days gone by, the past ....naturally.  I have some gathered together in the glass-front barrister (or lawyers) bookcase in the living room. A collection of sorts.  A few, my grandmother's...a few, my mother's...a few, picked up while thrifting.

A lot of glare, but it gives an idea. I don't pursue pieces of this...I don't need a large collection to enjoy it...and this is sure plenty. If a piece is so unique, and it just jumps out and grabs me, and shouts LOOK AT ME!!...I may get it if the price is very very low, which only occurs at a thrift store or maybe a yardsale. ;-)

This large piece is one of my favorites. I came across it at a Goodwill Store about a year or so ago. It was only $4.88 and I knew I would be a moron to not put it in my basket. It's beautiful, in perfect condition. I knew right when I decided to purchase it, what I would use it for. It keeps my bracelets and earrings right there to grab every day, without having to dig!!!

I love the crimps in the edges of this double serving tray. It is Fenton's Hobnail Milk-Glass. They are discontinued...so it is special! No sentimental value, but it does remind me of "back then", just as Laura's post did about my mom's parties.

Here are two small hobnail milk-glass cups in our Master bath. One of the BLUE varieties included. Love that color.

The lower candy dish in this little birdie/nest display was my Mama's. So it is quite sentimental! Again, love the shapes pressed into the glass.

In this photo is a Pitcher that I love to use in the summertime for bouquets.

Most of us have a smaller size vase made out of Milk Glass. They are abundant in thrift stores.

Well...that was a FUN post. ;-) But enough. Thanks to Laura for sending me down Memory Lane this morning, and a sentimental visit of my mom's wonderful gift of being a Hostess. Love to think about her sweet ways...

And, Thanks to any blog sisters stopping by. I hope you have a wonderful day, and hope that maybe you have a certain item or piece that takes you back to previous times, childhood days. It's all good.

Thank you also to all of you who continue to pray for the branches of our Military, our precious troops who are out there serving and sacrificing every day. They are a beautiful blessing to all of us here in the Homeland, living in freedom.

God Bless them. God Protect them.

That WAS a fun post! My gosh I love that piece with the jewelry on it!! What a gorgeous collection you have. I have a couple milkglass sets that are for sandwiches and coffee and a few of the little vases which as you say are so easy to find in thriftstores and a larger vase. I love vintage things an milkglass/hobnail pieces are some of my favorite.

Thank you for this wonderful post on milk glass, Julie. I love it. My mother-in-law had several pieces of it, but it must be packed away somewhere. My grandmother had several pieces, also. I didn't realize that there was more than just the white...hard to believe, huh? I love the blue glass in your bathroom! Also, don't know if you are aware of it or not, but Fenton Glass is located in WV. It is about a two hour drive from here!
